Attorney General Frosh Issues Statement on Alarming Rollback of Clean Car Standards

BALTIMORE, MD (March 31, 2020) – Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh today issued the following statement in response to the Trump administration's announcement finalizing a replacement rule rolling back the national Clean Car Standards:

The Trump administration's decision to roll back clean car standards threatens the health of millions of Americans and will cause irreparable damage to our environment.  This administration continues to ignore a wealth of scientific data that supports strict regulation of greenhouse gas emissions caused by vehicle pollution.  The Clean Car Standards have been proven to be achievable and are critical to preventing respiratory ailments and premature deaths.  Taking this action in the middle of a pandemic that threatens hundreds of thousands of lives highlights the recklessness of the Trump administration's determination to put the profits of fossil fuel companies above public health.  We will continue to oppose these efforts to chip away at critical public health and environmental protections.

In October 2018, a coalition of 21 attorneys general and the cities of Oakland, Los Angeles, San Jose, San Francisco and New York, submitted comments demanding that the Trump administration withdraw its proposed rule.

Attorney General Frosh is part a coalition of 24 attorneys general and the cities of Los Angeles and New York that filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration for its attempt to preempt California's greenhouse gas emission and zero emission vehicle standards.
