In 2007, Apple once again changed the game with the iPhone. That now-ubiquitous piece of tech collapsed multiple categories into a single portable computer and rewired global communication in the process. Each of these devices changed the world in ways we can still feel even in 2025. And today, another revolutionary device is poised to introduce yet another big technological leap we’ll be talking about for decades to come. The race to develop the next generation of slick, AI-forward wearables is on. But it’s not about the next evolution of the Apple Watch or a sharp new set of earbuds. 2025 will be the year that AI smart glasses finally take off… The Ghost of Google Glass Now, I know there’s no shortage of skeptics out there. After all, smart glasses haven’t had the best track record. I’m sure many of you remember the roll-out of Google Glass. A lot of consumers were initially excited when Google released these smart glasses back in 2014. Honestly, Google Glass had a lot going for it – the tech had a stylish form factor (by 2014 standards) combined with Google’s OS. A single wearable that gave users the ability to do everything from record video to translate speech hands-free. At the end of the day, the technology simply was not ready for prime time. The gadget was undone by laggy, unresponsive software that didn’t work as well as advertised. And the AI capabilities needed to make features like speech translation work well and consistently weren’t there yet. It was a similar story with another wearable Snap desperately tried to make happen… But once again, a lack of apps, a laggy display, and the prospect of wearing bulky goggles that were more Devo than GQ put many consumers off the supposed “hot-ticket” item on release. Source: Snap Unlike Google Glass, Snap’s dedication to their product is admirable – you can still find the latest fifth generation Spectacles in stores. However, it doesn’t seem that many are very keen on owning a pair any time soon. At one point, Snap actually wrote off over $40 million worth of its unsold Spectacles inventory. They just couldn’t attract the sales. And that tells you everything you need to know about where Snap is on the smart glasses adoption curve. It’s safe to say the previous generations of smart glasses just couldn’t nail what makes this tech so compelling. The technology wasn’t cutting-edge enough to convince consumers that wearing a clunky science project on their faces was better than a simple pair of glasses. They failed to execute on what the iPhone and the first wave of home computers did before them… These devices condensed multiple categories of work and communication into one slick, easy-to-use package. Everything from the tech to the form factor simply worked. Smart glasses clearly already had their “emperor is wearing no clothes” moment. But where those earlier iterations just couldn’t stack up, the story is totally different for this tech in 2025. Meta's Revolutionary Leap Forward Over a decade removed from the first wave of smart glasses, conditions have finally aligned for AI smart glasses to succeed. New players are entering the competition, and consumers are already buying them up in droves. Since their 2023 launch, Meta Platforms has sold more than two million pairs of its Ray-Ban Meta glasses — far surpassing the roughly 300,000 units sold by earlier models from Google and Snap. Meanwhile in China, Xiaomi blew through early targets. The company moved 80,000 units in just two weeks. Those gangbuster sales forced the company to raise its 2025 projection to half a million units. These numbers are promising, and this is just the beginning. The market for AI smart glasses is already valued around $1.3 billion – and it’s projected to reach over $3 billion by 2035. That’s a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.09% from 2025 to 2032. So it’s really not a question of if AI smart glasses will finally have their iPhone moment. AI glasses will become the new “front door” to the digital world. And at the rate consumers are buying them up, they could replace or at least displace the smartphone as our primary interface over the next decade. When that happens, investors who see it early are the ones who will capture all the generational upside. What Makes These AI Glasses Truly Smart Unlike those earlier misfires, the technology and form factor have completely caught up to the ambitious design principles companies like Google and Snap tried (and failed) to implement over the last decade. Just take a look at Meta’s latest pair of Ray-Ban branded glasses: Source: Ray-Ban The key differences between the technological advances of today and the last decade are already clear at a glance. This is because Meta has partnered with the Goliath of Glasses-makers, EssilorLuxottica. For those unfamiliar, the company was formed as a merger in 2018 between Essilor — a premiere lens manufacturer, and Luxottica ?— the world’s largest luxury frame makers responsible for brands like Oakley, Prada, Chanel, Versace and of course, Ray-Ban. Source: sec.gov As of 2025, Forbes estimates EsilorLuxottica controls around 25% of the global eyewear market. This strategic partnership not only gives Meta access to their partner’s extensive catalog of fashion eyewear brands and designers, it also provides them a built-in retail platform. Luxottica’s portfolio boasts a bevy of eyewear retail chains including Sunglass Hut, LensCrafters, Pearle Vision and more. Notice how these sunglasses actually look like a regular pair of wayfarers. No distracting hardware along the rim of the glasses. Just a sleek pair of glasses with tiny cameras embedded in the rims. I bet most people wouldn’t even notice the cameras. Now that we know this tech is no longer an eyesore or limited to gimmicky displays in retailers’ tech aisles, we can start to focus on what’s under the hood with the massive leaps Meta has made with AI. Meta’s glasses can now translate speech in real time, identify products in any store you visit at a glance, and even summarize lengthy business meetings in an instant. None of this was practical with the technology available a decade ago. In the decade ahead, the use cases here are obvious – and endless. Imagine a doctor glancing at a patient and instantly seeing vitals, history, or step-by-step guidance right in their field of vision. No clipboards. No glancing away. Just total focus on care. Or think about an engineer fixing a machine the size of a house. Instead of flipping through a manual, every part is labeled, every wire highlighted, and a remote expert can literally draw instructions into the air where they’re needed. Smart glasses can also do something no phone ever could: boost your memory. Imagine someone walking up to you at a conference and their name, company, and the last thing you spoke about appears right above their shoulder. You’re never caught off guard again. These are all daily, repeatable, and – most important of all – sticky functions. And unlike the previous generation of “smart glasses,” we don’t have to wait to see how cool all of these features might be some day. The tech and form factor are finally at a place where these glasses can do everything it says on the tin. That means mass adoption is no longer some far-off dream. It’s right in front of us, waiting to happen. But while companies like Meta are leading the race to get sleek AI wearables to market – I’m not recommending anyone buy Meta right now. The truth is, Meta may be selling the goods – but the real opportunity lies with a whole wave of stocks powering the key tech behind these devices. The Stocks Powering the Rise of AI Smart Glasses One of the most important and underappreciated aspects of the smartphone revolution is that most of the life-changing gains from the iPhone didn’t come from Apple. The real windfalls were in the supply chain. And that’s true whether you’re Apple introducing the world to one of the most advanced devices on the planet or Nintendo releasing a new gaming console like the Switch 2. Skyworks (SWKS) ran +1,000% making RF chips for everything from retailers to automakers. Broadcom (AVGO) turned into a multi-bagger on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth sockets. And Corning (GLW) made its Gorilla Glass the ubiquitous material that allows our iPhones to withstand falls from a great distance without cracking. Nobody camped out at Apple stores to buy those stocks. But they were the quiet 10X trades all the same. That’s the setup we see again today. This is not a speculative “metaverse” dream. May 31, 2025 AI Glasses Are Coming to Kill the iPhone You may not realize it yet, but the smartphone is dying. That sleek, glowing rectangle glued to your hand—the status symbol that defined the last 15 years of tech—is headed for the museum. The iPhone was built for the Age of the Mobile Internet. And we’re no longer in that era. We’re now fully entering the Age of AI—and AI doesn’t want your thumbs. It doesn’t want your screen. It wants your eyes, your ears, and your intent. And to serve that, it needs a new form factor. So what replaces the iPhone? Glasses. That’s not a sci-fi guess. That’s the writing on the wall—spray-painted in neon this past week. The Battle for Your Face Has Begun Just this week: Alphabet (GOOGL) announced a $150 million partnership with Warby Parker to launch AI-powered smart glasses, set to arrive as soon as 2026. OpenAI acquired Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup for $6.4 billion. Ive, for reference, designed the original iPhone in 2007. Ive has taken complete creative control at OpenAI and is tasked with building a new generation of AI-first hardware devices. It’s clear that Alphabet and OpenAI are betting the future of tech in the AI era is screenless. And they’re not alone. Meta Platforms (META) has been investing heavily in this space for several quarters, going all-in on its partnership with Ray-Ban. Its smart glasses have become wildly popular, with sales tripling in the past year—helped along, perhaps, by a Thor endorsement. Meta is also working on a stealth project—Orion—that aims to deliver finger-controlled AI glasses. Pretty futuristic stuff. Amazon (AMZN) continues to ship Echo Frames, betting on Alexa as the voice assistant of the ambient future. And yes, Apple Glasses are reportedly in development, evolving from Vision Pro into a lightweight, mass-market format. This isn’t a trend. This is a form factor war. And all of these companies—every one of them—is scrambling for one reason: They know the smartphone’s time is up. And whoever replaces it wins the next two decades. The iPhone Was for the Internet. Glasses Are for AI. The smartphone won the 2010s because it was perfectly tuned for the Mobile Internet Era: app icons, touchscreens, notifications, browsing, scrolling, clicking. But AI doesn’t thrive in that world. AI isn’t an app you tap. It’s an agent that observes, listens, and acts. It’s ambient. Contextual. Proactive. Invisible. The next device isn’t a better phone—it’s a layer between you and the world. Glasses sit on your face. They see what you see. They hear what you hear. And they can guide, narrate, summarize, translate, recommend, and remember—without you ever unlocking a screen. Smartphones are for input. AI is for interaction. That means the iPhone’s successor isn’t in your pocket. It’s on your face. That’s why every Big Tech firm is rushing to build AI glasses—not another smartphone. Who Will Build the AI Glasses That Replace the Phone? This is the most competitive tech race right now—for good reason. The prize is nothing short of global tech dominance. It’s Apple (AAPL) versus OpenAI versus Meta versus Alphabet versus Amazon. A multi trillion-dollar slugfest. Who wins? Hard to say—but here’s what matters: You don’t need to pick the winner to find winning investments in the AI glasses shift. Let’s rewind to 2007. When Apple launched the iPhone, it didn’t just create a new product—it created an entire tech economy: The App Store ecosystem Mobile-first advertising Push notification infrastructure Camera, audio, and sensor tech—all built into this new platform Apple was a massive winner. But dozens of other major stock winners were born in and around the iPhone ecosystem. Think Meta and Spotify (SPOT), which built smartphone-first apps. Think Cisco Systems (CSCO), Broadcom (AVGO), and Qualcomm (QCOM), which powered smartphone networking. Think Skyworks Solutions (SWKS), Cirrus Logic (CRUS), and Corning (GLW), which supplied key iPhone components. The best way to invest in the iPhone wasn’t just to buy Apple—it was to invest in the entire ecosystem. The same logic applies to the AI glasses race: invest in the ecosystem. And here’s the good news—we think the ecosystem will look similar no matter who wins ambient computing. The Key Suppliers Behind AI Glasses Whoever wins will likely rely on custom chips from Arm Holdings (ARM) or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors (already in Meta Ray-Bans). Nvidia (NVDA) will probably power much of the on-device AI. Sony Group (SONY) may lead in camera sensor supply—its tech is already best-in-class. Lumentum Holdings (LITE), STMicroelectronics (STM), and Himax Technologies (HIMX) could supply optical sensors, LiDAR, and gesture-tracking modules. Ambarella (AMBA) might deliver the computer vision chips. Corning (GLW), a longtime iPhone supplier, could provide smart lens glass and optics. SoundHound AI (SOUN) is vying for a spot in voice recognition APIs, though competition is stiff and Big Tech may prefer to build in-house. Twilio (TWLO) wants in, too. Unity Software (U) is another wild card. AI glasses need a spatial OS—not just a pixel OS. Unity’s real-time 3D rendering engine is tailor-made for spatial rendering, gaze tracking, gesture recognition, and environmental overlays. Then there’s Okta (OKTA), which could carve out a niche in identity and security management for AI-driven ambient systems. Of course, the AI glasses ecosystem is still forming. But the field is full of strong contenders. Final Thoughts The iPhone changed how we accessed the internet. AI glasses will change how we interact with reality. And just like last time, fortunes will be made—not just from the device, but from the ecosystem that helps it see, hear, think, and respond. The smartphone era was about touchscreens and apps. The AI era is about ambient intelligence and agents. And that demands a new form factor. The iPhone is dead. Long live AI glasses. Bloomberg/Getty Facebook 2030 Mark Zuckerberg's AR bet   Moving the Market: Mark Zuckerberg says the creation of "breakthrough augmented reality glasses" is a top priority for Facebook in the next decade, reflecting his belief that AR — or the overlaying of data onto the real world — will be the next revolutionary computing platform after mobile.   • In a new post outlining his priorities for the decade, the Facebook chief predicted that "at some point in the 2020s, we will get breakthrough augmented reality glasses that will redefine our relationship with technology."   • He also predicted that AR glasses would give people "the ability to be 'present' anywhere" and work remotely, alleviating issues like "ballooning housing costs and inequality of opportunity by geography."   The big picture: The rise of a new computing platform such as AR would give Facebook a chance to move aggressively into the hardware space, which is currently dominated by Apple and Google.   • As The Information's Alex Heath has noted, Zuckerberg's interest in owning hardware "reflects an underlying paranoia about the risks of depending on tech platforms controlled by other companies."   • To date, "Apple and Google have called the shots in the tech industry as custodians of the two dominant mobile operating systems, giving them extraordinary power over companies like Facebook," Heath writes.   What's next: The AR race. Facebook plans to release its first AR glasses in 2023. Apple, which is working on several AR hardware projects, has also set 2023 as the target date for its glasses. Josh Edelson/Getty Future of Facebook, con't.   Moving Menlo: The Facebook chief also outlined other ambitions he has for himself and his company in the decade ahead, from more intimate forms of communication to new opportunities in commerce and payments.   • Communication: "Our digital social environments will feel very different over the next 5+ years, re-emphasizing private interactions and helping us build the smaller communities we all need in our lives."   • Commerce: "Over the next decade, we hope to build the commerce and payments tools so that every small business has easy access to the same technology that previously only big companies have had."   Big in the Beltway: Zuckerberg also touched on regulation, reiterating his belief that Facebook should be regulated and should not make independent decisions "that touch on fundamental democratic values."   • He also noted that Facebook will soon have an independent oversight board that will allow users to appeal Facebook's decisions regarding content. 🇺🇸 Talk of the Trail 🇺🇸   Bloomberg Watch: "There is a way that people generally run for president. And there is whatever Mr. Bloomberg is doing," NYT's  Matt Flegenheimer writes, after spending 17 hours on the trail with the media mogul.   • The big picture: "Bloomberg has risen to about fifth place in the national polls, consistently trailing the front-runners but outpacing several hopefuls who have been hustling for much of the last year." John Lamparski/Getty Verizon Horizon Hans Vestberg kills the bundle   Talk of the Telcos: "Verizon Communications is eliminating traditional cable bundles and the handcuffs that often came with them, making it easier for households to switch video packages in the hopes they won't cut the cord entirely," WSJ's Sarah Krouse reports.   • "The telecommunications company will allow Fios customers to select their home internet speeds and television packages separately, at preset rates."   • "Rather than locking customers into one- or two-year contracts, customers will be able to change either service monthly, if they wish."   • "Under the new pricing plans, Verizon will sell three tiers of internet speeds, ranging from $55 to $80 a month, including router costs."   The big picture: "The new structure offers Verizon an opportunity to gain incremental revenue from a pay-TV business that has suffered customer defections as more consumers have embraced streaming services." Landgraf predicts the number will increase "substantially" in 2020, NYT's John Koblin reports.   • The big picture: "In 2015, Mr. Landgraf argued there was 'simply too much television' and coined the term 'Peak TV.' He predicted that an inevitable decline was likely to set in soon. Instead, the growth has seemed endless." NBC/Getty Fox Populi Megyn Kelly talks 'Bombshell'   Moving Midtown: Megyn Kelly has posted a 30-minute YouTube video in which she and other former Fox News journalists who said they were sexually harassed at the network talk about "Bombshell," the dramatic film about the takedown of Roger Ailes.   • The video shows Kelly and the other women, as well as Kelly's husband Douglas Brunt, watching "Bombshell" at a private screening before discussing what the film got right and what it got wrong.   The big picture: The women all share chilling stories about their experiences being harassed or resisting harassment, as well as the consequences they paid for speaking out or refusing advances.   • While they all agree that the film gets a lot right, they also suggest that it let Ailes off too easy. Ailes repeatedly denied any wrongdoing. Ailes passed away in 2017.   Oh/and: The women also hit Irena Briganti, the network's veteran PR chief, for planting hit pieces on Kelly and other Fox News talent at Ailes' behest.
