NYPD believes person of interest in CEO shooting has left New York City | Investigators have a "reason to believe" the person of interest in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has left New York City, police commissioner Jessica Tisch told CNN today. The suspected gunman rode a bike from the crime scene to Central Park, then took a cab to a Port Authority bus center, where he may have taken transportation out of the city, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny told CNN. Police have released photos showing the face of the person of interest in the case. One law enforcement official confirmed the image was captured when the individual lowered his mask to speak to a woman working the desk at the Upper West Side hostel where he was staying. While the motive remains under investigation, the fatal shooting of Thompson has unleashed a torrent of online criticism of the health care industry. CVS Health confirmed it has removed photos of executives from its website in the aftermath of the shooting. |
Judge dismisses manslaughter charge in Daniel Penny subway chokehold trial |
The judge overseeing the trial of Daniel Penny has dismissed the top manslaughter charge in the case, after the jury repeatedly said it was deadlocked on that count against the Marine veteran accused of killing Jordan Neely with a chokehold in a New York City subway car in May 2023. The decision means jurors will now only consider the lesser charge of criminally negligent homicide against Penny. It carries a maximum sentence of up to four years. Penny has pleaded not guilty. The prosecution has argued that Penny acted recklessly when he restrained Neely by the neck for about six minutes. Witnesses said Neely had been yelling and behaving erratically aboard the train. |

Federal appeals court upholds law to potentially ban TikTok in U.S. |
A federal appeals court panel has unanimously upheld a law that could potentially ban the popular video app TikTok in the United States beginning early next year, citing national security concerns and the collection of data from users. The law signed by President Joe Biden in April requires TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, to sell the platform to an American owner by Jan. 19, 2025, or face an effective ban. TikTok argued that the law is a violation of its First Amendment rights, and that China does not influence its algorithms. In a statement, TikTok vowed to appeal today's decision to the Supreme Court. |

President-elect Donald Trump is sitting down with NBC News' Kristen Welker today for his first network interview since winning the election. The exclusive interview comes as Trump is publicly doubling down on support for his embattled pick for defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, amid allegations of alcohol abuse and reports about his treatment of women, which Hegseth has denied.
