Tesla will be reporting after the bell on Wednesday while Intel will be reporting at the same time on Thursday.

Tesla: The Robotaxi Business Model Faces Its First Test

Autonomous Operations at Scale

Tesla launched its robotaxi service in Austin in June 2025, marking a significant milestone in the company's evolution from electric vehicle manufacturer to autonomous mobility platform.

Wednesday's earnings call provides the first opportunity for management to disclose concrete operational data. The market has long valued Tesla on the promise of high-margin recurring software revenue. The robotaxi service represents the first large-scale validation of this model.

Critical metrics:

Fleet expansion and utilization: Initial deployment included 10 robotaxis with plans to scale to 1,000 vehicles within months. Progress on scaling and utilization rates will indicate whether unit economics support the business case
Geographic rollout: Management outlined plans for autonomous coverage of half the U.S. population by year-end. Updates on California deployment signal execution capability
Revenue contribution: Even preliminary figures would validate the high-margin software model underpinning Tesla's premium valuation

The timing amplifies significance: Tesla reported record Q3 deliveries of 497,099 vehicles. Demonstrating strength in both traditional automotive sales and autonomous services would validate execution across multiple business lines.

The Strategic Pivot from Dojo to Cortex

Tesla disbanded its Dojo team and shut down the custom supercomputer project in August, representing a fundamental shift in AI infrastructure strategy. This carries profound implications for Full Self-Driving development and the Optimus humanoid robot program.

Dojo was positioned as Tesla's proprietary advantage—custom hardware optimized for training vision-based neural networks.

CEO Elon Musk stated Dojo 2 had become "an evolutionary dead end," pivoting entirely to Cortex, which utilizes standard Nvidia H100 GPUs.

The critical question centers on development velocity. Tesla indicated that Cortex, comprised of roughly 50,000 H100 GPUs, enabled significant improvements in FSD V13. If abandoning custom hardware actually accelerated development by leveraging mature Nvidia infrastructure, this strategic retreat transforms into a competitive advantage.

Intel: The Foundry Strategy

Ohio Fabrication

Intel has invested approximately $1.5 billion of the $28 billion total Ohio commitment—barely 5% of planned deployment. This measured pace suggests significant caution regarding demand visibility or concerns about return profiles.

Key considerations:

Government funding: Intel received $1.5 billion in CHIPS Act funding for Ohio as part of $7.86 billion total. Support provides financial cushion but creates performance expectations
Capital discipline: Management positions delays as aligning production with market demand, suggesting uncertainty about customer demand timing
Strategic complexity: Balancing government objectives, internal product needs, and external customer requirements while managing substantial cash burn

The External Customer Challenge

Intel disclosed in SEC filings that the company has been "unsuccessful to date" in attracting significant customers to its external foundry business.

This is critical—Intel's IDM 2.0 strategy depends fundamentally on winning substantial external customers beyond early Microsoft and Amazon design wins.

Intel's 18A process node targets volume manufacturing in late 2025, with the company projecting it will "regain process leadership." However, process leadership requires customer validation through actual manufacturing commitments.

The Nvidia partnership dynamic:

Strategic investment: Nvidia made a $5 billion investment in Intel and is collaborating on custom x86 CPUs for AI infrastructure
Potential manufacturing relationship: Reports indicate Nvidia may evaluate Intel foundries for certain products. Securing Nvidia as a manufacturing customer would provide transformative credibility
Market signaling: If Nvidia trusts Intel to manufacture their products, it signals process maturity to the broader semiconductor industry

Additionally, Intel is reportedly in early discussions with AMD regarding foundry services. While manufacturing chips for its primary competitor appears counterintuitive, AMD requires manufacturing diversification and Intel needs anchor customers.

Shifting gears...
