In the University of Manchester’s Computing Machine Laboratory, a new Ferranti Mark I computer hums behind rows of valves and whirring tape drives. It’s 1951. And the Ferranti Mark I is Britain’s first commercial electronic computer — a two-ton mass of vacuum tubes, magnetic drums, and paper-tape readers.
