NIFA Director Named to Lead UF/IFAS

Dr. J. Scott Angle, NIFA Director

Dr. J. Scott Angle accepted an offer to become the Vice President for the University of Florida College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Gainesville, Florida. He will assume this role in July 2020. The Department will appoint an Acting Director, who will be based in Washington, D.C., and will serve following Dr. Angle's departure. In the meantime, the National Institute of Food and Agriculture's (NIFA) leadership team will work closely with Dr. Angle to plan for the Agency's transition and ensure operations will continue seamlessly without effecting mission continuity. Dr. Angle has been a steady hand and visible leader for NIFA since being sworn in by Secretary Perdue on October 29, 2018.

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Advanced Biofuels and Bioproducts Process Development Unit (ABPDU) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) is celebrating its pattern of successful industry collaborations, including the addition of its 50th industry partner, Bay Area startup MycoWorks.

The ABPDU, established in 2012, serves as a scale-up testbed for industry stakeholders to work with LBNL to develop technologies that transform raw materials — such as plants and waste — into sustainable products that impact our everyday lives. The DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy's Bioenergy Technologies Office provides co-shared funding to ABPDU industry partners to demonstrate these technologies and systems at progressive scales.

The ABPDU has proven to be a key resource in defining where biotechnology can succeed in the marketplace. Its partners have ranged from National Labs and universities to emerging startups and established companies. As a direct result of working with the ABPDU, many of these partners have set up their own labs or pilot plants and secured additional funding and several partners have launched commercial products.

Learn more about the ABPDU and its successes advancing the bioeconomy.
