November 15, 2024 $10 Million Funding Opportunity for Critical Materials R&D The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE's) Critical Materials Innovation Hub (CMI Hub) announced up to $10 million in federal funding to accelerate the early-stage technology research and development (R&D) necessary to reduce material criticality for energy innovations requiring critical materials—rare earth elements, gallium, and copper. "The continued investment into innovative R&D critical materials projects is key to securing domestic, reliable, and resilient supply chains," said Chris Saldaña, director of DOE's Advanced Materials and Manufacturing Technologies Office. "DOE and the CMI Hub are putting a specific emphasis on industry partnerships to facilitate adoption and bring these solutions to market." This request for proposals (RFP) solicits proposals for projects across the following topic areas: Environmentally benign rare earth metal and alloy production. Efficient gallium byproduct recovery, separation, and concentration. New compounds to reduce gallium content in gallium nitride semiconductors. Improved processes for gallium semiconductor manufacturing that minimize waste generation. DOE renewed the CMI Hub for a third, five-year phase of operations that began in November 2023. The CMI Hub is part of DOE's broader investment on critical minerals and materials. This report presents statistical tables on state and local law enforcement training academies and law enforcement recruits in 2022. The report describes the number and types of law enforcement training academies in the United States in 2022, and it presents findings on the characteristics of recruits and training outcomes. Findings in the report are based primarily on the 2022 Census of Law Enforcement Training Academies (CLETA), the fifth iteration of the data collection. Conducted periodically since 2002, CLETA collects information from training academies that are responsible for administering mandatory basic training to newly appointed or elected law enforcement officers on recruits, staff, training curricula, equipment, and facilities. These academies are operated by state, regional, county, and municipal agencies and by universities, colleges, and technical schools. Library of Congress Acquires Papers of Academy Award-Winning Songwriter Burt Bacharach The Library of Congress has acquired the papers of songwriter and composer Burt Bacharach. Bacharach's songs are best known for influencing popular music starting in the late 1950s. This is the first collection acquired from a recipient of the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Songwriting duo Burt Bacharach and Hal David received the Gershwin Prize in 2012. Bacharach was best known for his songwriting scores for various films and popular artists such as "Alfie," "Arthur's Theme," "Close To You," "Do You Know the Way to San Jose," "I Say a Little Prayer," "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," "This Guy's in Love with You" and "What the World Needs Now is Love" to name a few.
